Burketown is located in on the Savannah way in North West Queensland roughly 30km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Situated between savannah grasslands and the vast saltpans of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Burketown nestles beside the picturesque Albert River.


By Road

Burketown is located 200km by road west from Normanton and 430km north of Mount Isa. If travelling from the Northern Territory, the town can be reached via Daly Waters and Doomadgee.

From Normanton

Burketown is located about 200km West from Normanton and will take around 3 hours to drive.

From Mount Isa

Burketown is located about 430km North from Mount Isa and is around 6.5 hour drive.

From Cloncurry

Burketown is located around 450km North West from Cloncurry and will take around 7 hours to drive

From Cairns

Burketown is located around 900km South West from Cairns and will take around 15 hours to drive.

From Brisbane

Burketown is located around 2600km North West from Brisbane and would take around 22 hours to drive.

Skytrans is the only airline that services Burketown and has direct flights in and out from Cairns, Doomadgee, Mornington Island, Mount Isa and Normanton.

There are no direct trains to Burketown only a local Gulflander that operates between Normantan and Croydon.
